Second homes and their impact on rural areas

There's been a bit of a furore over comments made by one of our authors in an article in The Observer about rural poverty.

Sean Geraghty, who wrote The Borassic Coast, is at the centre of a storm over quotes attributed to him in the piece.

He says the comments weren't entirely accurate. But what he's cross about is that his concerns about second homes were missed out completely.

We've asked him to write a piece for this website. In the meantime, Sean's set up an online petition for a levy on the price of newly-purchased 'unoccupied dwellings', and increased council tax on existing ones to raise funds for self-build and affordable housing for local people.

You can sign the petition here.
